A Farewell to Cuneo Mansion
The setting for this dreamy fusion wedding was the acclaimed Cuneo Mansion in Vernon Hills, Illinois, known for its lavish halls, intricate architectural details, and highly regarded art collection. Built in the early 1900's for one of the founders of General Electric, it was purchased by John Cuneo Sr. in the 1930's. In the decades that followed, ownership passed to Loyola University, and Cuneo Mansion became the backdrop for extravagant weddings, galas, and corporate gatherings. There was also a brief moment of Hollywood fame when the Mansion was featured in the movie "My Best Friend's Wedding."
That era has now come to an end close as of mid-December 2025, when the property will transfer from Loyola University to the Village of Vernon Hills as part of a long-term historical preservation effort. With this transition, the mansion will no longer host private events, bringing an end to one of the Chicago area’s most iconic wedding venues.
While the closing is bittersweet, the intention is preservation rather than loss—ensuring the mansion and gardens can be protected and appreciated for generations to come. All this culminates into Aisha & Mark's wedding day, one of the last Cuneo may ever see, becoming truly one of a kind.
First Look in the Formal Dining Room
Beneath swirls of elaborate moulding and delicately painted scenes, Aisha and Mark saw each other for the first time that day in a sweet and playful first look inside the Formal Dining Room. The soft light of the growing day poured in through the room's large windows wrapping the space, throwing glittering reflections from the beading of Aisha's skirt. A spectacle unfolded after their tender embrace, lighting up the floor in whorls of fabric and smiles as she spun around, showing off the lushness of her adornment. They both were dressed in a way that felt right as home in the grandeur of the historic mansion.
Then the gaze of two statues guarded a timeless South Asian Wedding tradition- the Mehndi Name Game. Somewhere on the bride's hands and forearms lies the groom's name cloaked in the intricacies of the design, and the fate of his role in the marriage to come teasingly lies in his ability to locate it. If he finds it, he gets to "wear the pants" in the relationship, but if not then he'll get to enjoy the boss lady his bride gets to become. Of course this is all in good fun, and has become a snippet of playfulness added to the wedding weekend.
Ceremony in Cuneo's Grand Hall
Mark and Aisha greeted the initial arrival of close friends and family, with cries of joy and love filling the air above them. It wasn't long after that guests began filling the mansion's corridors, greeted with champagne and encouraged to browse at their leisure, giving opportunity to witness all that Cuneo Mansion is known for.
The intimate ceremony unfolded in the main hall as Aisha was escorted down the stairway on her father's arm, pausing only for the "mandatory" princess wave halfway to the bottom. A close friend of both her's and Mark's officiated, causing both tears and laughs to punctuate the already warm atmosphere of the vow exchange.
Garden Grounds and Reception Halls
While the couple was stolen away for a quick round of portraits and time alone together, guests funneled out to the back garden patio. Open bar, hors d'oeuvres, and the layered history of the gardens invited guests to linger, explore, and settle into the rhythm of the evening. The air was alight with clinking classes, tears of laughter matched by the whispers of soft nothings and inside jokes, and the shuffling of many feet carrying their owners into deeper revelry. Guests stood safe in the walls of towering hedges, fencing in the patio, venturing out onto the lawn where they found good company among classical statues silently keeping company among their conversations.
Inside the reception hall, handwritten notes from Aisha and Mark awaited each guest. tailored to each sharing memories, gratitude, and love. As seats were occupied and the quiet conversation of the notes whispered through the black ink, an air of love and deep sentiment floated over each table as more guests read over words spoken just to them. But like a firework bursting out of the dark, a grand entrance exploded as Aisha and Mark took center stage, dancing through their loved ones and heading to the head table. And so, room settled in comfortably for what followed- a round of toasts, cake cutting, and the serving of dinner.
Plate after plate, glass after glass, cheer after cheer, the night stretched on. When the lights finally dipped low and the music swelled, the dance floor shone like a beacon in the dark. Cultures, generations, and rhythms blended into a single, electric movement. One of Cuneo Mansion’s final wedding nights was full to bursting with motion, warmth, and celebration.
